LEAGUE APPLAUDS SUPREME COURT’S UPHOLDING OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAW
    December 10, 2003

Ruling Will Bring Integrity and Credibility to the Campaigning Process

WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Supreme Court today announced its decision to uphold key
provisions of the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA) that had been
challenged in McConnell v. FEC.  The divided Court voted 5-4 to uphold the main features
of the law, banning “soft money” and restricting “sham issue” advertisements.

‘This is a huge win for the American public,” stated Kay J. Maxwell, President, League of
Women Voters of the United States.  “It establishes a firm foundation for diminishing the
role of special interests in government,” she added.  “The Court was faced with one basic
question…should our government serve the special interests or the interests of the
people?  The people won.  BCRA brings campaigns back to where they should have
always been - not fueled by big money, large corporations, and special interests- but
supported by individual citizens,” she stated.

“BCRA brings integrity and credibility back to the campaigning process and lessens the
influence that money has on campaigns and candidates,” said Maxwell.  “It gives voters
a better understanding of the candidates for whom they are voting by revealing the issues
they support and the special interests that support the candidates. When voters are given
more information, they are able to make better educated and more informed decisions
when they go to the polls,” said Maxwell.
