2005 ANNUAL MEETING AND BETTY HILL FORUM ON INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

It was Friday the 13th, but the League of Women Voters of Weston made the most of the clear, sunny (but cool) May day, never-the-less!  The Three Bears Restaurant made excellent arrangements for all three activities--Annual Meeting, in-between socializing, and the Betty Hill Forum on International Affairs.

The Sixth Annual Betty Hill International Forum was addressed by Dennis Walto, Associate Vice-President, Leadership Giving, at Save the Children.  Mr. Walto stood in for the suddenly ill, advertised guest speaker, 'ROYA HAKAKIAN'. We hope she is better soon!

Mr. Walto discussed his start in community organizing (in the Gary Hart for President Campaign).  With "Save the Children" since 2000, he has spent much of the past years in places abroad and is scheduled to go back to Africa in the Fall.  He addressed the issues of making a difference in foreign communities and helping others take action to save their lives.  Without building the underpinnings of meaningful, longterm relief thru self-help and building a community structure, all the world-wide donations and generousity will wash away in the next disaster.
